Washington, D.C. – November 20, 2023 – The Homes for Every Local Protector, Educator, and Responder (HELPER) Act has secured cosponsorship from 100 members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
The HELPER Act is bipartisan legislation that would offer a Federal Housing Administration-insured home loan option to police and corrections officers, firefighters, EMTs and paramedics, and preK-12 teachers without a down payment or monthly mortgage insurance. The HELPER Act was originally sponsored by Representatives John Rutherford (R-FL) and Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) and Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Jon Ossoff (D-GA), and Banking Chair Sherrod Brown (D-OH).
“The HELPER Act is one of the most important pieces of legislation for which I have ever advocated,” said George McElwee, co-founder and managing partner for Commonwealth Strategic Partners. “Our 100 cosponsors from both parties and across the country reflect its significance, and we look forward to securing more as we work to get the HELPER Act done.”
“I am so proud of the progress we have made for the HELPER Act,” said Sam Royer, founder and president of Salute Home Loans (NMLS: 2471166) and the visionary behind the HELPER Act. “We have been working with Rep. Rutherford for years to get this benefit for first responders and teachers, and it means so much to now have 99 members of the House backing us up.”
In addition to its 100 cosponsors in the House and 14 in the Senate, the HELPER Act is endorsed by over 225 national, state, and local associations, unions, and elected officials. It awaits consideration in the House Financial Services Committee and the Senate Banking Committee.
